Inspired By ... Barbie at the Malt Shop

Next in the Inspired By ... Barbie! series, I looked at a cover featuring Barbie at a malt shop!

I personally prefer the "vintage" Barbie, that would be Barbie's image from the 90's and earlier. She can be a great role model in many ways, looking at her positive and cheerful attitude, her up-beat and friendly nature, and who could forget her many talents (from artist to astronaut, Barbie has had more than 80 careers). And with more than 105 million yards of fabric and billions of pairs of shoes used to create her extensive wardrobe, I think it's only fair that we borrow a few. She may be a doll, but Barbie can represent so much more, and inspiration for fashion can come from anywhere!

I feel like I've missed out on a part of my childhood. Apparently back in the '90's Mattel had released several fashion comics starring Barbie and her friends, and while they have a certain "Archie and Friends" feel to them, I can't help but feel inspired by what she wears on the cover!

The inspiration

How cute is this? By multiple conversations, Panda and I have come to the conclusion that if we were to live in any other time period besides the present, we would want to live in the 1950's. This may be based on a childhood of reading Archie Comics {and basing any idea of dating from those series} but here are our reasons:
  • You can wear adorable dresses,
  • Adorable skirts,
  • And pants,
  • You get to "bop" at the "sock hop"
  • You could swing, do the Charleston, and lindy-hop {which probably aren't in the right time era but I like to imagine that '50's teens could do a charleston on cue}
  • Your date will always arrive in either a suit or his nicest clothes with flowers,
  • The majority of your dates and after-school hang-outs will take place at the malt shop, where we would assume the owner is called 'Pop' and you are such a regular you even have a tab going,
  • Sharing a sundae, soda, or malt with your date,
  • You get to say awesome slang such as "neato-keano"
  • Grease, Back to the Future, and Singing in the Rain
  • Your professor of archaeology will recover lost artifacts and save the world when he isn't grading your paper,
  • Elvis and the Beatles,
  • And life would be a musical around the jukebox
And who is better to look to for 50's inspired fashion than Barbie, who was created in 1959? Especially since the trend for the summer is to channel vintage and retro clothes from just about any decade in the past.

The Music

This entire post was also partly inspired by the Barbie and the Rockers {and The Sensations in the second half} movie. If you haven't seen it, it is on youtube, and was a favorite of Panda's. My favorite cover done in the movie is "Here Comes My Baby" by Cat Stevens. You can listen to the song below, and feel inspired!
