Inspired By ... Nancy Drew!

Nancy Drew's Guide to Life

Nancy Drew is the very stylish, very intelligent, as kind-hearted as she is independent, amateur sleuth solving mysteries usually with her friends Bess and George, and sometimes with her boyfriend Ned Nickerson. She can paint, speak French, sew, and can even change a tire. And although it has been many years since I've read the books, I still remember Nancy's attitude and style.

Your Modern Lady

In the novel's descriptions, ink illustrations, and numerous cover art, Nancy is often depicted wearing very stylish skirts and dresses. Her character is very lady-like, she avoids gossip, is courteous, and is polite even to criminals. Her personality is reflective of her style, her dresses may have a v-neck but they are never revealing, and her skirts and dress lengths are usually above the knee, complete with wearing heels and sometimes gloves for a very polished look. Some of her dresses are described as cotton suits, or she may pair a blouse with a fitted pencil skirt. Nancy's style may be labelled as "vintage," but it can also be easily applied to work and classes!

The Mystery of the Cloche Hat

Inspired by the original cover artwork for "The Secret of the Old Clock," I used a blue dress similar to the color and length Nancy is wearing. The Mary Jane heels are similar in style and height (as far as I could see) but are black instead of brown, with a cloche hat that reflects the style of the early 1920-1930's (the Nancy Drew mysteries were first written in the 1930's). The clock necklace, of course, refers to the Crowley clock in the story (but I dont want to give too much away!).

The Secret of the Green Dress

The second outfit is inspired by the re-issued cover art used for the yellow hardcovers. Since the art is the "newer" edition (and the style of Nancy I am personally more familiar with) I thought the style would also be a little more adaptable to everyday university life. Her shoes for instance, although covered by the grass so it isn't clear if they are heels or flats, would most likely be heels; but that usually isn't the case for most university students who have to run around campus, so I used black flats instead (how Nancy chases after criminals in heels, I'll never know). Her dress has the same v-neck and cap sleeves as the cover, and is a little darker but I thought it had the same shape and length. The clock necklace also looks just like the clock in the cover, and would look so elegant with the color of the dress. Now, Nancy may not be wearing a trench in the cover, but since trench coats have been in style for the last several years, and are iconic with detectives, I thought it suited!
