Inspired By ... Barbie! - Lets go fly a kite

Continuing with the Inspired By ... Barbie! series, I looked at another cover featuring Barbie in a fun spring skirt while flying a kite!

I personally prefer the "vintage" Barbie, that would be Barbie's image from the 90's and earlier. She can be a great role model in many ways, looking at her positive and cheerful attitude, her up-beat and friendly nature, and who could forget her many talents (from artist to astronaut, Barbie has had more than 80 careers). And with more than 105 million yards of fabric and billions of pairs of shoes used to create her extensive wardrobe, I think it's only fair that we borrow a few. She may be a doll, but Barbie can represent so much more, and inspiration for fashion can come from anywhere!

I feel like I've missed out on a part of my childhood. Apparently back in the '90's Mattel had released several fashion comics starring Barbie and her friends, and while they have a certain "Archie and Friends" feel to them, I can't help but feel inspired by what she wears on the cover!

The inspiration

I absolutely love the polka dot skirt Barbie is sporting on this Kite themed cover. Add simple black flats, a black sun hat, and of course a kite and you're all set for a fun afternoon!

The Style

Staying true to Barbie's favorite colour, this pink version of the cover features a flirty pink skirt similar to the cover, except without the polka dots. Maintaining the colours in the cover, I added purple camis to match the pink skirt, keeping the outfit fun and simple. Add always stylish black flats and a black sun hat {sun protection is key!} for a perfect day of flying kites!

The only thing I want to point out about this outfit is that when I was originally creating it, the purple tank from modcloth.com was originally the front view {as seen above}. Between creating the outfit and saving it, the image had changed to the back view, and I wasn't able to change it back to the original image {even when using the Polyvore clipper}. You can see all angles of the shirt at the original site: here.

Another Style

I wasn't able to find a pink polka dot skirt similar to the cover's, so instead I created another outfit following the style but this time with a blue colour scheme!

The polka dot skirt here, although in a lovely shade of blue, is just like the skirt Barbie wears on the cover! Keeping with the blue palette, I paired the skirt with a mint green tank, or to bring out the white dots in the skirt wear a plain white tee. The shoes are very simple, exactly like Barbie's shoes on the cover. The large black earrings resemble the simple earrings Barbie wears, but the crescent detailing adds some personality. Finally, wear a hat to protect your head from the sun!

What I like about these outfits is that they are very simple and yet they say a lot. This just goes to show that fashion doesn't have to be extravagant, but a nice pairing of classic staples.

Lets go fly a kite

I dont know about you, but this whole kite theme has gotten one song stuck in my head. How it got there, I'm not quite sure, but it brightened my day a little, and so here is a little tune to set you in your kite flying mood, courtesy of your childhood:
